On April 1st, 2023, the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team suffered a tough loss in the Final Four against the UConn Huskies, ending their run for the NCAA championship title. Head coach Dawn Staley expressed her disappointment in her team’s performance during the post-game press conference.

“We just didn’t perform,” Staley said. “It’s as simple as that. We didn’t play to our potential, and that’s on us as coaches and as players.”

Staley, who is also the head coach for the USA women’s national basketball team, is known for her competitive spirit and high expectations for her players. She has led the Gamecocks to multiple SEC championships and NCAA tournament appearances, including a national championship win in 2017.

Despite the loss, Staley gave credit to the UConn Huskies for their strong defense and execution on both ends of the court. She also expressed her pride in her team for their efforts throughout the season.

“I’m proud of my team for getting this far, but we didn’t come here just to participate. We came here to win,” Staley said. “We’ll learn from this experience and come back stronger next season.”

Staley’s comments reflect her dedication to her team’s success and her belief in their ability to bounce back from defeat. Her leadership and guidance have helped to elevate the South Carolina program to national prominence, and her players look up to her as a role model both on and off the court.

As the Gamecocks head back to Columbia, they will use this loss as motivation to improve and strive for even greater success next season. And with Staley at the helm, there is no doubt that they will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in women’s college basketball.
